Nearly 40 faculty and instructional support staff gathered in February at a monthly meeting of Community of Educational Technology Support (ComETS) members to explore what emerging technologies might be deployed on the UW-Madison campus to improve instruction to students.  Six campus presenters showcased their research, highlighting how some of today’s information technologies have the potential to both positively and negatively impact teaching and learning.

UW-Madison a "Center of Excellence"

UW-Madison was recognized as a "Center of Excellence" from the New Media Consortium (NMC). For those of you who don't know, the NMC is a non-profit consortium working in collaboration with college campuses, museums, and centers for Art, Science and Research across the country. The NMC's mission is to "explore and promote innovative applications of technology for teaching, learning, and creative expression." The NMC was founded in 1993 and UW-Madison is a charter member. This award goes out to "Campus Technology Partners" to recognize Madison's "systemic and comprehensive approaches to faculty support." We believe this reflects our work in digital media centers (including the newly renamed Digital Media Center @ Biotech), the efforts of ComETS members in promoting innovative approaches to technologies for teaching and learning, and recognizes our comprehensive approaches to faculty support. NMC is well know for its annual Horizon Report which charts the landscape of emerging technologies for teaching, learning, and creative expression. Last Fall Larry Johnson, the CEO of the NMC, visited UW-Madison to lead a ComETS event examining Learning Technology Horizons and to consult with several campus groups. Larry introduced many of us to Second Life - and UW-Madison continues to be a strong partner on the NMC Second Life campus. We hold a campus membership, which means everyone on campus is eligible to participate in NMC events. Alan Wolf, a member of the ComETS planning group and campus representative to the NMC, will help pass on more information about NMC activities as they arise. We encourage you to go to http://nmc.org/ to learn more about the New Media Consortium.
