Date:
04/23/2008 - 1:00pm - 4:00pm
Location:
Memorial Library, Room 126

Dr. Carl Berger will discuss his research on students and faculty and differences in the use of technology in teaching and learning that show how a new millennial instructor is emerging, sometimes resembling the millennium student, and sometimes the traditional faculty member, but most often unique. Are we ready for the implications of this new teacher? Following the presentation will be break out sessions to discuss issues and ideas for how our campus can better support these new teachers.

Purpose

During the past year of Media Shops meetings I had many requests to create a formalized, more active group out of the Media Shops group. A group that could represent the various interests of the Media Shops on campus. The purpose for this meeting will be to start moving in that direction

Things to Do in Upcoming Session

Professional Development

Final Cut Pro Training

  • There was discussion about bringing in a trainer to give professional development to a large group of us.
  • This would focus on medium to advanced level FCP training --> some suggested a "tips & tricks" session
  • If this would be done as a Prof Dev. Grant would need to be submitted something in Jan - Mar 2010
    • If we decide to go down the Prof Dev. path, Josh would like to form a working group to work on the proposal.
  • We also discussed having someone from PTE give us a training session
    • Probably Braden Bruington
    • Josh said he would contact him
  • Another FCP trainer could be MATC
  • Josh will explore the PTE path first and then we will go down the other paths, if that is a no go

Production Techniques

  • This training would focus more on the art of getting good video, lighting, sound, etc.
  • The actual creation of video.

Presentation Ideas

Remote Instruction

  • Adobe Connect
  • Josh said he would contact Jeff Bohrer to arrange for the eLearning PA to do a presentation on the tool and how to buy it

HD Roundtable Part 2

  • An open discussion about issues with HD.
  • This session will not be necessarily run by anyone but rather a chance for members of the campus to bring thoughts, ideas, issues, and solutions about HD video to an open discussion.
  • Josh suggested that we create a wiki page to create more focused topic areas.

High Performance Network

  • Dave Devereaux-Weber volunteered to do a presentation on how to best optomize your network for high-speed transmission of data.
  • Josh suggested that this also might be a good time to give an update on the current state of Daytan.
  • Dave said this may also be a good time to present on how to set up a live internet video event.

CMS Head-to-Head

  • Multiple members of the media shops group have to deal with supporting faculty members that are interested in multiple CMSes, including Moodle, Drupal, and L@UW.
  • It was suggested that we have one presentation where representatives from each camp do a compare and contrast
    • This would assist media shop members with consulting faculty members.
    • The main goal would be to find out what each does well and not so well so media shop members have the tools they need to suggest the right option.
  • Dusty Smith said he would contact Paul Oliphant to be the Moodle (eCOW2) representative.
  • Josh Harder spoke with Dennis Renzel about possibly having Doug Worsham be the Drupal Representative.
  • Josh Harder said he would connect with Jeff Bohrer to find a good L@UW representative.
  • It was also suggested that each rep. being given a common task that can be done in all 3 CMS and then we can see how one achieves this task. For example, setting up a quiz, embedding video, etc.

Digital Repositories

  • Anna Lewis suggested the topic of Digital Repositories.
  • Another media shops member said that other groups on campus involved with this topic are Minds@UW and Wisconsin Public Television (WPT)
  • Anna Lewis said that she would explore this presentation topic further
  • This could also be a good group to ask the question, "What would you want out of a digital repository?"

Lecture Capture Update

  • The Media Shops group expressed great interest in getting an update on the Lecture Capture pilot.
  • It was suggested that this would be a good thing for Brian Deith to talk to us about.
  • Josh said he would contact Brian and ask if he is interested

Online Presentation Tools

  • The topic of eTEACH was brought up for a presentation.
  • Josh suggested rather than just a presentation on eTEACH it should be a presentation on the presenation tools, eTEACH, Articulate Presenter, Adobe Captivate and possibly Adobe Presenter.
  • Josh said he would think about this, but he may need to wait due to other commitments

WebCheckout

  • Josh and the DMC are exploring using WebCheckout to manager resource reservations and checkout.
  • When Josh mentioned this to the group it seemed like there was interest.
  • Josh said he would contact his WebCheckout sales rep to see if he would be interested in presenting to the group.

Troy Reeves

  • In email communication with Josh, Troy expressed an interest in doing a presentation for something he has cooking.
  • Josh will communicate with Troy to find out more.

Media Shop Census Working Group

One of Josh's goals with this session of Media Shops is to get a comprehensive list of Media Shops on the UW-Madison. This list would be promoted and linked to by the various entities on campus. It would be a good reasource for faculty, staff, graduate students, and undergraduates for finding the services that are right for them.

Volunteers

  • Bob Ash
  • Dave Deavereaux-Weber
  • Linda
  • Dennis Renzel
  • Theresa Saldaña
  • Josh Harder

Outline of Tasks

  1. Define Specifications
    1. We need to define what information we want to gather from the different media groups on campus.
  2. Define Who Should be on the List
    1. We need to come up with a definition of who should be on this list.
      1. If it is just one person in a department providing services to a small group, should he/she be on the list?
  3. Define the Information Gathering Mechanism
    1. Once we have decided what information to gather and who should be on the list, we need to figure out the best way to gather information
      1. Mass email with a link to a Google form?
      2. Mass email with a link to a survey?
      3. Something else?
  4. Define the Information Repository
    1. Once we get the information, where do we put it?
    2. I suggested we keep things simple and just have a website hosted somewhere. It could just contain an HTML table that lists the shops and the specifications we decided on.
    3. Are there other options?
  5. Define a Communications Plan
    1. Gathering information, creating a list, and posting it online means nothing if nobody looks at it.
    2. We need to decide what mechanisms we should use to promote the list.
    3. I also think an important component is getting entities on campus to link to it and also give up there own lists and link to this one.
  6. Define a Maintenance Plan
    1. A major failure with previous lists of this type is that they become outdated.
    2. We need to come up with a plan for keep this list up-to-date as media shop come into existence and go away; as website URLs change, etc

Action Items

  • Josh will contact PTE to see if they would be interested in hosting the FCP training
    • If not, Josh will pursue setting up a working group to get a Prof Dev. grant going.
    • UPDATE: Peter Kleppin has indicated that he would like to assist with this. If not in training with PTE, then perhaps in assisting with getting the Prof Dev Grant through.
    • UPDATE: Josh sent the following email to Braden Bruington on 11/23/2009:
      • Braden,

I hope things in this pre-turkey day season are treating you well! I also hope things are going well over at PTE, especially now that the heavy drilling from the Union South construction seems to have subsided.

As you may or may not know, I am the lead of the Media Shops group on campus. This is a group that brings the various media shops about campus together to communicate similar needs, wants, issues, etc. One of the hot topics this group discussed during our recent planning meeting was having a medium- to advanced-level Final Cut Pro training session. We were thinking this could be something similar to the sessions you see brochures about that last two days and are a kind of "pack in as much information as you can". Perhaps the information disbursement could last over two days, perhaps 6 hours each day.

The audience would be the Media Shops group which consists of Academic Staff who support Faculty and Instructional Staff.

I was wondering if this is something that could be arranged through PTE. If so, what is the big picture behind planning something like this? What are the first steps? Who would I talk to?

Thank you for any information you can provide,
        Josh

  • Josh will contact Jeff Bohrer of the eLearning group to see if they can do an Adobe Connect presentation.
    • UPDATE: Josh contacted Jeff Bohrer's PA and he indicated that he would be ready for a presenation at any point and time.
    • NEW ACTION ITEM: Josh will arrange a time for this presentation.
  • Josh will create a wiki page where Media Shop members can contribute topics for the HD Roundtable Part 2
  • Josh will work with Dave Deavereaux-Weber to finalize a time for his presentation
  • Dennis Renzel will contact Doug Worsham about the CMS head-to-head
    • UPDATE: Josh was contacted by Doug who said he would be up for this kind of presenation
  • Dusty Smith will contact Paul Oliphant about the CMS head-to-head
    • UPDATE: Dusty contacted Josh and said that Paul is up for the presentation as well
  • Josh Harder will contact Jeff Bohrer about the CMC head-to-head
  • Linda will pursue the idea of a presentation on Digital Repositories.
  • Josh will contact Brian Deith about doing a lecture capture update.
  • Josh will think about doing an online presentation tools presentation, but he has to think about it because his name appears in many places on this page. :)
  • Josh will contact his sales rep from WebCheckout to see if he can arrange a time and place for demo.
    • UPDATE: Josh contacted Dan Pyne and he said he would do a demo
    • NEW ACTION ITEM: Josh will set up a time for this presentation
  • Josh will communicate more with Troy about his presentation.
  • Josh will create a working space on this wiki for the Media Shops Census Working group and arrange next meeting to go over goals
