Cole Camplese's work with Twitter recently sparked one of the longest and most interesting comment threads on the Chronicle of Higher Education's Wired Campus blog.

Cole, the Director of Education Technology Services (ETS) at Penn State, will be "dropping by" via Adobe Connect on July 1st for a little bit of conversation about using Twitter as a back-channel in his teaching, and a lot of conversation about increasing engagement, interaction, and relevance in learning environments.

DoIT Academic Technology has kindly made their conference room at 1401 University Avenue available for this event. Join us for good speakers, a good microphone, and good company.

Bring your questions, and get ready for what is sure to be a fun and lively conversation.

The Twitter hashtag for this event is: #uwcomets

To RSVP, just drop a comment below. And if you have particular question or topic you'd like to discuss, please add your ideas to the comment.

People from beyond campus?

Hi Doug! Thanks for setting this up. Any chance at people from outside UW tuning in?

Extending the conversation

Cole - interesting idea! I'll check in on that and get back to you soon!

At the very least we're going to need a twitter hashtag, right? Any suggestions?

hashtag and outsiders

Any more info on people from outside coming in? How about #comets as a hashtag?

#uwcomets it is!

Perfect! We've needed our own hashtag. Let's use #uwcomets, though, as a quick look at #comets had too much discussion of asteroids and space debris ;-)

So, here it is, the all new UW ComETS hashtag: #uwcomets

Looking forward to seeing the buzz!

me too

Looking forward to it. I'm also curious about leveraging twitter in IT organizations for improved efficiency/communication/idea-sharing. Cole, have you had success in this area?

Twitter for organizational communications

Hi Jeff ... yes, we use Twitter quite a bit to push content out and stay connected with the community. I can be prepared to discuss that if you raise the question.

Looks great.

More than one back channel

I'll be there if I can.

When I went to check out the Chronicle story about Cole's work with Twitter, I noticed that it appeared in my browser with highlighting and annotation from readers via Diigo!

twitter in learning

I'll be there. I'm especially interested in how twitter has changed instructor knowledge of what students know and are able to do with the content in a course as well as any connection to changes in how or what is assessed in a course. Also, how has it changed the conversation and connection between students and the student to instructor relationship?

Assessment

That is the really interesting question in my mind ... assessment has to change, but how? When Twitter emerged in the course I'm going to discuss we didn't expect it to happen, so our assessment didn't add up. We had this insane amount of twitter conversation from 2/3 of the class -- at all hours of the day -- and we couldn't decide how it factored into the overall discussion. We are working on some things for spring when we teach the course again that will allow us to more effectively monitor what is happening in the twitter space.

As far as helping to monitor what students know, I think what watching the twitter stream gives you is an opportunity to better understand how deep the content is connecting with the students. In other words, when we observed students having twitter conversations about the course during non-course hours we suspected they were working to gain a deeper understanding of the content through increased dialogue. It was an interesting and exciting thing to watch.

I'm looking forward to it.

Google Wave and the back-channel-o-sphere

I finally watched the Google Wave preview today, and couldn't help but think that teaching back-channels have to be among the many things that this new technology is going to shake up in a major way. Any initial thoughts on Google Wave? Is this IM/Wiki/Blog/Tweet platform the future of the back-channel? And how do we get rolling on this in academia?

If you haven't seen it:

I will be there.  Do we need to find a larger, or a second location?

Alan

Good question Alan!

How many people fit in the Luther's conference room (comfortably, that is)?

Other possible locations?

RSVP count to date

It depends, 20 is not too bad, but some people are sitting against the wall.  Other AT people chime in if I am wrong.

We now have an overflow room

John has booked the second AT conference room as an overflow room for this event!

We should have room for up to 25 or 30, depending on how desks and tables are organized.

RSVP

See you there.

I'll be there.
