eInstruction Instructor FAQ

What do I need to use e-Instruction in my class?

You need to make sure that the classroom you are teaching in has a video projector. You are responsible for providing the laptop installed with the CPS software and the receiver which attaches to your laptop via a USB cable. You can get the receiver, software, and a test clicker at no cost from e-Instruction by requesting an instructor kit. Clickers are purchased by your students, registered, and brought to class - they are not installed in general assignment classrooms.

What kind of computer do I need to run eInstruction?

Answer: You can use a PC or Mac computer. The exact configuration needs are listed below. Note that you will need to provide your own laptop if you want to use e-Instruction as the UW-Madison general assignment classrooms do not have computers installed in them.

Windows Operating System

* Intel Pentium III or higher processor
* At least one open USB port
* A minimum of 512 MB RAM
* At least 120 MB of hard drive space for CPS software; databases may require more hard drive space
* Microsoft Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4, Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2, or Windows Vista
* Screen resolution of 800x600 or higher
* A projector to display the questions to your students

Macintosh Operating System

* Mac OS 10.3.9 or higher
* PowerPC G3 300 MHz or better processor, including Intel
* 256 MB of physical RAM (512 MB recommended)
* 200 MB of free hard disk space
* One open USB port
* Screen resolution of 800x600 or higher
* A projector to display the questions to your students

How do I get a clicker and receiver?

Instructors who want to use eInstruction should contact the company for an instructor kit. An instructor kit includes a receiver, 1 clicker and the necessary software on CD. Instructor kits are free. For more details, see the page on Requesting an Instructor Kit. You will install the software on your personal or departmental laptop and attach the receiver to it during class to receive clicker responses from your students.

Can I try out clickers before I have my students invest?

Instructors can check out a 32 clicker unit from theDigital Media Center. The Digital Media Center Classroom can also be scheduled to try out the systems in a classroom. To check out the system, call 265-4817. Additional information can be found on the Digital Media Center's website.

One of my students left his or her clicker in the classroom - how do I find out whose clicker it was?

Ask your local support personnel if they have access to the support database or e-mail academictech@doit.wisc.edu.

Question markDo you have a question about Student Response Systems or eInstruction? E-mail the Campus Clickers - a cross campus group of instructors and support staff. You can also join the group!
